Why Should We Have A Personal Constitution?

“You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water” Rabindranath Tagore

Human life is very short in order to learn every knowledge in the world, to visit every land or to gain experience in every field. We should accept this important fact and decide to plan our lives according to this fact. If you do not have any plan in life, you will be limited to what life offers you, you can waver between options and even end up with the points that are not in your mind. However, if you write a personal constitution for yourself, you will know everything you want to do in every aspect of your life and you will be aware of what you need to do to achieve it.

I would like to elaborate on the concept of the personal constitution for those who have never heard of it before. The personal constitution is a whole set of rules that apply to all your living spaces. You can think of the personal constitution as the constitutions of states. The main difference is no one will punish you if you act contrary to the rules. However, there will be no point in having a constitution that you will not abide by. The main logic is the same, therefore write your constitution to comply with it. For example, if you like smoking and you do not have any plan to change this habit; I suggest you not to add a subject like mine: “Kıvanç, chooses a healthy life, have regular exercise and avoid the habits that will harm himself.” Every item in your constitution should reflect your purpose of life and your way of life. Place items that you can fit and obey them.

The personal constitution can be written as detailed as you wish. You can add your life goals into it and if you want to achieve these goals, you can set annual, 5-year and/or 10-year sub-goals. There may be temporary clauses in your constitution. But the important thing is there should be essential articles which are compatible with your self-qualities. For example, my first 10 articles in my constitution are unchangeable. Let me share the first two of these to give you an opinion;

  1. Kivanc thinks and lives freely without dependence on anyone.
  2. He chooses a positive perspective on life and adopts an honorable life.

Like a state constitution needs a change from time to time, a personal constitution also needs change. My personal constitution currently contains 7 chapters and 117 articles. I change the articles that need to be changed over time and also add some new ones in case of need. When you decide to write your constitution, perhaps the most important point is that the articles in your constitution should be entirely yours. Each item you write should contain a harmony that is compatible with your character traits and goals. The constitution must be adopted by you.

Do not rush to write your constitution, writing a constitution is not something to be completed in one day. Give yourself time to think about it and clarify the appropriateness of the items by considering each item separately. Determine your basic values, your life mission and vision, add them to your constitution, and do not change them as much as possible. If your life mission and vision are clear enough, you can use your limited energy in life more efficiently. It has been a few years since I wrote my constitution and I can say that it is very useful in determining my path and clarifying my way of life. I believe it will also help you. If you decide to write a personal constitution and have any question in your mind, please feel free to write me. When you have a well-prepared constitution, you will be able to determine which direction you should go; just like an experienced captain who can easily find the right wind.
